(1) Typical "VH" variable gauge cylinderHydraulic cylinders expand the undercarriage and the hydraulic cylinders retract the undercarriage. Expanding the width of the undercarriage will increase the stability of the machine. Retracting the cylinders makes transportation of the undercarriage easier.

Upper structure that is perpendicular to tracksNote: Travel the machine during an adjustment for the variable gauge undercarriage. Swing the upper structure of machine until the upper structure is perpendicular to the tracks. In this position, machine weight is evenly displaced across the undercarriage.

(2) Left locking pins (8) Right locking pins (3) Pin retainersTo perform an adjustment to the undercarriage, remove pin retainer (3) from locking pins (2) and (8). Rotate locking pins (2) and (8) to the UNLOCKED position and travel the machine. While the machine is traveling, use the operator controls to adjust the undercarriage. Note: With locking pins (2) and (8) in the UNLOCKED position, all four variable gauge cylinders will extend in unison and the cylinders will retract in unison. There are four hydraulic cylinders that control the width of the undercarriage. After the undercarriage has been adjusted, stop the machine and rotate locking pins (2) to the LOCKED position. Insert pin retainer (3) into locking pin (2).

(4) Right variable gauge cylinders (5) Left variable gauge cylinders (6) Locking valvesDuring an undercarriage adjustment, oil flows from the pump to the following components: swivel (7), locking valves (6) and variable gauge cylinders (4) and (5) .Oil flow from swivel (7) flows to locking valves (6). Oil flows from locking valves (6) to the head end of variable gauge cylinders (4) and (5). Return oil from the rod end of cylinders (4) and (5) returns to locking valves (6) and to swivel (7) .Note: Locking valves (6) hydraulically lock variable gauge cylinders (4) and (5) as a safety feature when an undercarriage adjustment is not being performed.
