1) Order and provide the operator/owner with the Operation and Maintenance Manual SEBU8471-09 (or later revision) "Center-Lock Pin Grabber Coupler". Inform the operator/owner that the Operation and Maintenance Manual now states that a "Hydromechanical Conversion Kit" is required when operating hydromechanical work tools with the Center-Lock Pin Grabber Coupler on 330D, 336D, and 336E Excavators configured with DB Linkage. Inform them that this rework performed under this Service Letter will update the Center-Lock Pin Grabber Coupler and install the Hydromechanical Conversion Kit for use of the excavator and coupler with hydromechanical work tools. The "Hydromechanical Conversion Kit" only affects the coupler hydraulic control system. The machine still needs to be equipped with the proper "Tool Control" hydraulic system to provide the proper flows and pressures to operate a hydromechanical work tool.
2) Remove the Center-Lock Pin Grabber Coupler from the excavator and machine or replace the variable hook, identified by the arrow in Image 1.2.1, and install a Hydromechanical Conversion Kit. Refer the Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU8471, "Center-Lock Pin Grabber Coupler" for instructions on how to remove and install the coupler on the excavator. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, KENR6595, "Coupler Cylinder ? Remove and Install" for the proper procedure to remove and install the coupler hook. Depending on the excavator model, determine the proper Hydromechanical Conversion Kit required and follow the included instructions to install the kit. 3) Affected Center-Lock Couplers in dealer's inventory should remove the Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU8471 from the plastic publications container and replace it with the Operation and Maintenance Manual SEBU8471-09 or later revision. The affected coupler should then have the hook machined. Since there is no machine that the affected coupler is installed on, no further action is required. When the coupler is sold in the future, it will be the responsibility of the customer to purchase the Hydromechanical Conversion Kit if needed for their application. Since this issue affects only couplers used with hydromechanical work tools, customers using these types of tools should receive first priority when reworking the field population.
PARTS ORDERING INSTRUCTIONS
Hooks:
Due to very limited availability of replacement 423-7098 and 423-7097 Hooks, the priority should be machining the existing coupler hook per Service Magazine SEPD1525, "DB Linkage Center-Lock Quick Coupler Hook Ramp Profile Modification for 330D, 336D, and 336E Excavators".
If the Hook Assembly cannot be machined due to reasons such as wear, inadequate facilities or remote locations, the Hook Assembly can be replaced. The affected couplers could be installed on a 330D, 336D, or 336E excavator equipped with the DB Linkage. Determine if the affected coupler S/N is contained in "Group 1" or "Group 2" and only if necessary order the "Hook As" for the group the coupler S/N falls into.
