Place the Caterpillar Monitoring System in service mode. First, determine the mode number for service mode. Use the table "Monitoring System Mode" on the Electrical System Schematic for the machine that is being serviced. Then, ground the service and clear contacts of the service connector. Remove the ground when the mode number for service mode is shown on the display.Note: The scrolling mode may be entered in order to see the diagnostic codes, but the diagnostic codes can be more easily diagnosed by using the service mode. The service mode allows the diagnostic codes to be placed on hold for further investigation. The service mode also allows the diagnostic codes to be cleared when the problem has been fixed.
A diagnostic code is shown and the code is on hold at this time. The display toggles between showing MID (3) and CID (5) and FMI (6). When there are no diagnostic codes, the display (1) shows "---".
In order to view all the diagnostic codes, scroll through the diagnostic codes. In order to scroll through the diagnostic codes, ground the contact of the service connector. The display momentarily shows MID (3), CID (5) and FMI (6) for each diagnostic code. The word "End" is shown after the last diagnostic code in the list.Note: The following procedures may cause some new faults to be logged. Therefore, record all diagnostic codes before you perform any procedures. As each procedure is completed, clear the diagnostic codes that were caused by the procedure.
Place the desired diagnostic code on hold. In order to place the diagnostic code on hold, remove ground from the contact of the service connector when the desired diagnostic code is shown.
Use the MID in order to determine the electronic control system that is generating the diagnostic code. If the MID is not "030", see Electrical System Schematic, "Module Identifier (MID) Table" of the machine that is being serviced. Use the table in order to determine the electronic control system that has detected the diagnostic code. Then see the service manual module for that electronic control. If the MID is "030", use this Service Manual to troubleshoot the diagnostic code.
Observe service code indicator (4).
If service code indicator (4) shows "SERV CODE", then the diagnostic code that is shown is currently present.
If service code indicator (4) is OFF then the diagnostic code that is shown is not present
