The standard winch has one idler gear and the low speed winch has two idler gears. The adjustment of the bearings for each gear is the same.1. Put idler gear (3) without gears (2) and (6) in the winch case.2. Install cage (1) without the O-ring seal and shim (5) with two bolts (4). The bolts must be 180° apart on the 55 Winch and approximately at the 9 o'clock and 2 o'clock positions for the 56 Winch.3. Tighten bolts (4) to a torque of 150 lb. in. (17 N m) in 75 lb. in. (8.5 N m) steps. Make a rotation of gear (3) after each step.4. Loosen the bolts.5. Tighten the bolts to a torque of 80 lb. in. (9.0 N m) in 40 lb. in. (4.5 N m) steps.6. Measure the clearance between cage (1) and the winch case. Take the average of these two measurements and add .013 in. (0.33 mm). This is the shim thickness needed for a .001 to .003 in. (0.03 to 0.08 mm) end play of the idler gear(s).7. Make a selection of the shim pack with a tolerance of .001 in. (0.03 mm).8. Install cage (1) with shims (5) and all of the bolts.
TYPICAL EXAMPLE9. Make a rotation of gear (3). Use dial indicator (A) to measure the end play of the idler gear. On later cages a plug can be removed to measure the end play with dial indicator (A).10. Remove idler gear (3) and install gears (2), (6) and idler gear (3). Use the correct amount of shims.
