(4) Auger material height paddleThe material height sensor components are on the rear of the tractor. The right side components are shown in the illustration above. The left side components are similar.The material height sensor for the conveyor is enclosed inside upper protective housing (1). This sensor is connected to conveyor material height paddle (2). The material height sensor for the auger is enclosed inside lower protective housing (3). The sensor is connected by a rod to auger material height paddle (4). During paving operation, conveyor material height paddle (2) rests on the paving material at the rear of the conveyor. The greater the amount of paving material at the end of the conveyor, the farther the paddle is pushed toward the rear of the machine. Auger material height paddle (4) rests on the asphalt at the outboard side of the auger. The greater the amount of asphalt at the end of the auger, the farther the paddle is pushed toward the outside of the machine. The sensors convert the position of the paddle to an electrical signal. The signal is sent to the machine ECM.

(5) Material height sonic sensorSonic sensors can be used in place of the material height paddles. Material height sonic sensors (5) (conveyor sonic sensor shown as example) are mounted on the rear of the tractor. The sensors may also be mounted to the screed end gates.Material height sonic sensors (5) transmit and receive sound waves. The sensor determines the time required for the sound waves to reflect off the paving material and return to the sensor. The elapsed time indicates the amount of paving material present. The material height sensors provide pulse-width modulated signals to the machine ECM.Each material height sonic sensor (5) has a red indicator light on the end of the sensor. This indicator light is illuminated when the sensor is working properly. This indicator light blinks when the sensor has failed or the sensor is operating outside the working range.
