Grounding Practices
Proper grounding is necessary for optimum engine performance and reliability. Improper grounding will result in uncontrolled electrical circuit paths and in unreliable electrical circuit paths.Uncontrolled electrical circuit paths can result in damage to main bearings, to crankshaft bearing journal surfaces, and to aluminum components. Uncontrolled electrical circuit paths can also cause electrical activity that may degrade the engine electronics and communications.Ensure that all grounds are secure and free of corrosion.The diesel generator set is grounded to the deck of the ship by the customer under the following guidelines:
Two separate ground straps are installed in opposite corners: one ground strap on the engine, and one ground strap on the generator
The ground strap must be uninsulated 111MCM wire.
When possible, bolts, studs, and collar studs that are already in place shall be welded and used for connections for the straps.Periodically verify the grounding practices that are described above for proper installation and for lack of corrosion.
