Information:
Diesel engine exhaust contains products of combustion which may cause personal injury.Always start and operate the engine in a well ventilated area, and, if in an enclosed area, vent the exhaust to the outside.
Personal injury can result from hydraulic oil pressure and hot oil.Hydraulic oil pressure can remain in the hydraulic system after the engine has been stopped. Serious injury can be caused if this pressure is not released before any service is done on the hydraulic system.Make sure all of the attachments have been lowered, and the oil is cool before removing any components or lines. Remove the oil filler cap only when the engine is stopped, and the filler cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Introduction
Varying hydraulic oil temperatures or abnormal vacuum pressure in the hydraulic system may indicate a plugged hydraulic tank breather. Perform this procedure to test the condition of the hydraulic oil breather.Test Preparation
Drive the machine to a smooth, horizontal surface.

Move propel lever (1) to the NEUTRAL position.
Move parking brake switch (2) to the ON position.
Move throttle switch (3) to operate the engine in LOW-IDLE position.
Illustration 2 g03810854
If the machine is equipped with a leveling blade, use blade control pedal (4) to lower the blade to the ground.
Illustration 3 g03810856
After the engine has operated at low idle for 5 minutes, move engine start switch (5) to the OFF position. Test Procedure
Illustration 4 g03810914
Slowly remove cap (6) from the hydraulic tank. Listen for escaping pressure. The cap is not vented. Replace the cap.
If pressure escaped from the tank, go to the "Adjustment Procedure". Adjustment Procedure
Illustration 5 g03810862
Unhook latch (7) at the rear of the engine compartment and open engine hood (8).
Illustration 6 g03810869
Move hood support bracket (9) in order to support engine hood (8).
Illustration 7 g03817151
If there was pressure escaping from the hydraulic tank when removing cap (6), replace breather (10). The breather should be venting the pressure in the hydraulic tank.
Move hood support bracket (9) to the stored position.
Close engine hood (8) and secure latch (7).
